Colorado State basketball adds Minnesota transfer Kevin Dorsey

The Colorado State men’s basketball team on Thursday announced the addition of Minnesota transfer Kevin Dorsey.

As a Division I transfer, Dorsey will have to sit out the 2016-17 season and has three years of eligibility.

The 6-foot point guard was a highly regarded prospect coming out of high school, rated by multiple sites as a four-star recruit. But he had a rocky freshman season with the Gophers.

After averaging 6.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in the season’s first 26 games, he was suspended for the final four games by coach Richard Pitino for a violation of team rules.

According to multiple reports, Dorsey was suspended after a sexually explicit video was posted from one of his social media accounts in March. Dorsey claimed his phone had been stolen, and his Twitter account was deleted shortly after the video was published.

“As we do with any student-athlete that CSU is looking to add to the program, the athletic department and the University does their due diligence,” CSU coach Larry Eustachy said in a statement. “The group collaborates to evaluate each potential student-athlete so those selected will be a positive impact to both their program and to the University as a whole. With Kevin, we have done the same and, as he is welcomed to campus, we look to continue to help him in his development as a young man.”

With the Rams already at the scholarship limit, Dorsey will be a walk-on this season.
