Carver boys endure first loss

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The G.W. Carver boys basketball team suffered its first loss Saturday, falling 44-41 in overtime to Potter's House (Fla.) in the Source Hoops Panhandle Classic.

Tony Nelson led the Wolverines (6-1) with 14 points and eight assists, while Joe Strugg had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Carver's leading scorer, Brandon Austin, was limited due to a sprained ankle suffered in Friday's win at Jeff Davis. He scored just three points in two minutes of playing time.

Kevin Smalls led Potter's House (3-2) with 12 points. Udoka Azubuike, a 6-foot-11 center who is the 13th-ranked junior in the nation, had 10 points.

Carver hosts Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday.

PRATTVILLE – Carlos Coleman scored 14 points and Chance Dicus added 10 led the Lions, in coach Earl Taylor's debut, against the Mustangs (0-5). Prattville plays at Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday.

STRAUGHN – Richard Boggan totaled 20 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Panthers (6-1) in the third-place game at the Straughn tournament.

Jay Williams posted 11 points and 10 assists for Georgiana. Jeremy Sims added 12 points and Tarien Crittenden also had 11. The Panthers play at Andalusia on Tuesday.

Landon Carnley had 24 points and Ethan Deal 11 for the Rebels.

Donnie Williams had 16 points Friday for the Thunderbirds (3-7), who play Monday at Benjamin Russell. Brandon Evans poured in 40 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (2-6), who host Dadeville on Tuesday.

Brandon Austin had 18 points to lead the Wolverines (6-0) over the Vols (1-9) on Friday. JD hosts Northview on Tuesday.

CLAYTON – Cortez Gibbs scored 22 points and Corneliuis Gibbs 16 for BTW (0-3), which plays at Sidney Lanier on Tuesday. Markeith Williams had 14, Dywuan Walton 12 and Stephon Walton 10 for the Jags.

Maurice Strong scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and the Hornets (3-3) shot 52 percent.

DeMarcus Robinson added 13 points, while Brandon Graham and Jamel Waters added 11 each. ASU's starters were a combined 22-for-34 from the field. Bobby Brown came off the bench to score 11 points.

Jeremy Watson's 28 points and 18 rebounds led the Gamecocks (5-4).

ASU plays at Western Illinois on Saturday.

Xavier 97, Alabama 84

CINCINNATI – Ricky Tarrant led the Crimson Tide (5-2) with 23 points. Levi Randolph added 15, Shannon Hale 12 and Rodney Cooper 10. Alabama hosts Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

Myles Davis scored a career-high 18 points for the Musketeers (6-2). J.P. Macura had 13 points, Remy Abell and Jalen Reynolds added 12 each, and Dee Davis and Matt Stainbrook scored 10 each.

Cortez Riley had 12 points to lead the Eagles (8-3) against the Knights (2-7). Marquis Grays and Alex Anderson added 10 each. Faulkner, which played without leading scorer Nick Drake due to a death in Drake's family, hosts Talladega on Friday.

Senior Alex Layson scored a career-high 25 points and made 12 of 13 free throws to lead the Hawks (1-5). Dantavius Washington had 12 points, while Jerome Davis and Andre Ashley added 11 each. Huntingdon faces Centre on Dec. 19 in Atlanta.

TROY – Kevin Thomas' 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting and 11 rebounds led the Trojans (3-3). Musa Abdul-Aleem had 19 points, Oskar Reinfelds 14 and Wesley Person 12. Troy plays Fort Valley State in Dothan on Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – David Alexander scored 19 points and Graham Olatunji 13 for the Golden Tigers (3-2), who travel to Eckerd on Dec. 17.

Senior Pat Pickens, who set a NCAA-era school record with 37 points in the Hawks' last game, set another with 20 rebounds Saturday. She also scored 17 points.

Mackenzie Garmany finished with 17 points and Jenna Dorman 12 for Huntingdon (2-2), which hosts Oglethorpe at 3 p.m. today.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Jasmine Peeples had 15 points and 12 rebounds for ASU (2-3). Britney Wright and Daniele Ewert added 10 points each. The Hornets play at Troy on Saturday.
