Player of the Week
Kendall Williams, New Mexico Lobos
The 6’4” Junior guard had a huge offensive explosion, going for 46 points against Colorado State hitting 12-16 from the field (10-13 3FG, 12-17 FT). William's junior season has been very efficient as he’s averaging 14.1ppg and 5 apg while spearheading the No. 14 ranked Lobos to their very successful season. New Mexico was 2-0 during the week and surely improved their NCAA Tournament seeding with wins over Colorado State and San Diego State University. It will be interesting to see if Williams can continue to perform at this level to help New Mexico during the post season.
Tyler Brown, Illinois State Redbirds
Brown has put together five solid games in a row, even though his Redbirds have been a bit disappointing this season and will probably miss the NCAA Tournament unless they win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Redbirds are still not performing well with a 2-3 W/L record over their last five games. Over the last five games, Brown is averaging 24 ppg and 6 rpg and has played up to the preseason hype. There were some noted disciplinary issues with Brown, but it seems that he has worked through those and intends to end the season on a high note. Possibly, Brown will still be a factor in the draft as a late second round pick or a free agent signing is also a possibility.
Mike Muscala, Bucknell Bison
Mike Muscala has continued his dominant senior season averaging 23ppg in two games last week. The 6’11” Muscala is averaging 19.4ppg, 11.1rpg, and 2.6bpg on the season and has helped the Bison to a 24-5 record for the year (11-2 Patriot). The Bison have won 8 out of the last 10 games and remain first in the Patriot League. Muscala has finally made his way onto NBA Scouts radar as many have begun to take notice. He’s currently listed as the 39th pick in our NBADraft.net 2013 mock draft.
Nate Wolters South Dakota St. Jackrabbits
Nate Wolters is currently playing well and has led his team to a 6-1 record in the month of January. Wolters is currently averaging 23ppg, 6apg, and 6rpg during his senior campaign. He helped improve his Jackrabbit team to 22-9 (13-3 Summit). Wolters is currently listed as the 34th pick in our NBADraft.net 2013 draft. Wolters is a quality creator and primary ball handler.
Anthony Bennett, UNLV Runnin’ Rebels
Bennett has cooled off as of late and over his last five games he’s only been averaging 10.8ppg. The fact that injuries are starting to rear their ugly head is a bad sign as that was the knock on him coming into college, being able to make it through the year. He may have hit the freshman wall, although many teams in the WAC have keyed their defenses to stop him. Bennett is still averaging 17ppg and 8.4rpg for the season but the Runnin’ Rebels have been subpar during their league play going 8-5 in the Mountain West Conference.
Tony Mitchell , North Texas Mean Green
North Texas has been very below average this season, especially for a team that many figured would have an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament prior to the season. North Texas is currently 12-19 (7-13 Sun Belt). Mitchell has not been very good over the course of the season; although he’s picked up his play at times. He’s currently averaging 13.7 ppg 8 rpg and 2.7 bpg and this has taken too few attempts and seems not to be interested at times. Mitchell will likely be a utility player once he gets to the next level, but I think the North Texas situation hasn’t helped him improve very much as a player. Mitchell is currently prospected at 19 in the NBADraft.net 2013 Mock Draft.
Top Five 2nd Round Sleepers
Nate Wolters, South Dakota State
After four years of starting at Point Guard for South Dakota State, I think he may be a steal being picked up in the second round if he lasts until the 34th pick where he’s projected. I think he could become a Mark Price type point guard that can shoot it from deep and create for others while not being the most athletic player on the court.
Robert Covington, Tennessee State
Covington can do the one thing that the NBA lacks overall and that’s shoot the basketball. At 6’9” I think someone will take a chance on Covington even though he sustained the knee injury that kept him out of for a portion of this season, with his ability to stretch the defense and make shots. If he finds the right fit in the NBA, he could be a solid contributor.
Jamaal Franklin, San Diego State
Similar to former Arizona Wildcat Hassan Adams, Franklin is an under skilled freak athlete. He has a toughness that he brings to the game having played under Coach Fisher at SDSU. Franklin will need to develop a consistent jump shot in order to play the shooting guard position in the NBA as he’s probably undersized at 6’4-6’5 to play the small forward position.
Mike Muscala, Bucknell
Muscala shoots the ball well and seems to have a very high basketball IQ. He’s the only player in Div I basketball this year to average 19 ppg, 11 rpg, and 2.6 bpg. Some think he lacks the foot speed to thrive in the NBA, but I believe he’s athletic enough to make the adjustment. It also helps that he’s a four year player, which should make the transition easier. Currently projected to be 39th pick by NBADraft.net
Elias Harris, Gonzaga
Harris once had first round hype surrounding him as a freshman. He could fit in as a combo forward for a team and with his ability to play inside and stretch the defense. His body is mature and shows the potential to continue to develop at the next level. He has a lot of experience with four years under his belt at Gonzaga and has also played against many NBA players internationally over the summer.
