PLAYER PROFILE
Name: Malik Newman
School: Callaway, Jackson, Miss.
Year: Senior
Position: Guard
Height: 6-4
College: Undecided

Details: Led Callaway to a fourth consecutive 5A state title and a 31-3 record this season, averaging 29.8 points. 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. Was the MVP of the FIBA World Championships while playing for USA Basketball’s U17 National Team.

Toughest to guard: Emmanuel Mudiay. He’s big, strong and fast and at the time I was guarding him, his jump shot was going.

My biggest basketball influence: My father.

High point of the season: Winning the state championship.

Biggest disappointment: Those three losses that we took.

Who’s cooler, SpongeBob or Patrick: SpongeBob.

Favorite musician: Yo Gotti.

Favorite teachers: (Callaway girls basketball) Coach (Stacey) Bailey for math and Miss (Jennifer) Simmons for English.

Hidden talent: I can draw a little bit. I also like to spit out a few rhymes.

What do you teammates say about you? I am demanding. I am fun to be around. I am fun to play with.

Inspiration: Just knowing that I have a little brother and little sister. Knowing that my fams are still there for me.

First car: Cadillac Escalade. It’s not a 2015.

First time you beat your dad in one-on-one: About two years ago. He quit playing me after that.

Biggest thing I’ve overcome: Losing my grandmothers. I lost one last year and another when I was eight or nine. The one that I lost at a young age took care of my when my dad was busy.
