NBA Comparison: Sergio Rodriguez

Aran Smith - 2/19/2008

Strengths: Heady playmaker who excels in pressure situations ... Proved what a clutch performer he is in the 2006-07 Colonial Conference title game and first round upset of Duke in which he hit the game winning shot ... A fierce competitor who never backs down and always gives his all ... Has excellent size and good speed and athleticism for the NBA point guard position ... Excels at driving to the basket and dishing or using floaters to score ... Has good body control and does a solid job of creating fouls and getting to the line ... Has assumed a larger offensive role with the team in his junior year ... Can knock down 3 pointers and mid-range jumpers with regularity ... Has really worked hard at his shooting, (hitting 42% as a junior) ... A true leader, an essential quality for a point guard ... Does a good job of turning his shoulder to get by defenders ... A pest defensively both on and off the ball ... Does an excellent job of protecting the ball and making smart passes. Limits his turnovers, as reflected by his 2-1 a/to ratio, his a/to ratio as a sophomore was a whopping 3-1 ... Has excellent passing ability with quick reads and great vision ... Feeds the post well and lays the ball up exquisitely on ally oops ... Has great accuracy on his passing consistently dropping the ball on a dime ... Beginning to really understand the nuances of the position, controlling tempo, spacing offensively to find passing lanes, and running the pick and roll ...

Weaknesses: A solid NBA athlete but not a superstar athlete ... His shot mechanics are ugly but effective ... Has a bit of a slow release meaning defenders have a split second longer to recover and disrupt his shot ... His shot (or lack of a fundamental motion) was the main reason he ended up at VCU instead of an ACC school ... Has an unorthodox release as he puts his guide hand above the ball, in order to keep his thumb out of the way ... On the skinny side, but nothing anemic. He could stand to add 5-10 pounds of good weight ... Has a tendency to stand a round a little too much offensively off the ball instead of moving around to free himself ... Will need to learn to become more productive off the ball as he's used to the offense running through him on every possession ... Struggles to get the recognition he deserves playing in the Colonial League ... There is some concern that he looks better than he actually is playing against mid major players throughout the regular season ...
