The University of Kentucky basketball team offered a scholarship on Sunday night to five-star point guard Derryck Thornton Jr. of Findlay Prep in Nevada during his visit to Lexington.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari cheers on his team in the second half of the Dec. 28, 2014, U of L-UK game at Rupp Arena.

Thornton, who was a standout player at last week's NBPA Top 100 camp, is the first point guard in his class to receive a UK offer.

Thornton is ranked No. 11 nationally by Scout.com, No. 18 by 247Sports.com, No. 20 by Rivals.com, No. 32 by ESPN.com.

Thornton's father, Derryck Sr., confirmed the news that was first reported by Scout.com. Thornton Sr. told The Courier-Journal on Tuesday that he thought UK would make an offer to his son.

"They're already really high on his list, even before the offer," Thornton Sr. said last week. "When you get offered by Kentucky, it says you're one of the best point guards in the country. Not that we don't know that already, but it kind of solidifies things."

Derryck Thornton Sr. formerly coached ex-UK player Enes Kanter at a Southern California prep school.
