Connecticut Boys Basketball POY: Matthew Moyer

The Gatorade State Boys Basketball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 fall season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Matthew Moyer

THE BASICS

School: South Kent School (South Kent, Conn.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-8
Weight: 215 pounds

Athletic achievement: He averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from inside the arc this past season, leading the Cardinals (20-10) to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class AAA semifinals. The state’s No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2016 as ranked by the New England Recruiting Report, Moyer averaged 21.5 points per game in the NEPSAC Class AAA tournament.

Academic excellence: Moyer has maintained a 3.61 GPA.

Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and an accomplished classical violinist, he has volunteered on behalf of an area soup kitchen and as a youth basketball coach.

THE PRAISE

“Matthew Moyer is a rare find in the basketball world,” said South Kent head coach Kelvin Jefferson. “He is a high-major talent on and off the court. You can find him playing a classical piece on his violin or dunking a basketball with authority. His (basketball) IQ is off the charts and he is a great leader and teammate.”

THE FUTURE: Moyer has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at Syracuse University this fall.
